lRE: Help Me Defeat a Trump Loyalist and Devotee
DT: Friday, February 4, 2022
Hello!
My name is Paul Heroux. I am a third term Mayor of Attleboro and was a State Representative for three terms. I am now running for Sheriff of Bristol County. I never thought I would be running for Sheriff, but I feel compelled to run. Many people and organizations reached out to me because of my background imploring me to run. We need change in the Sheriff’s office, and I’m excited to bring it!
The incumbent Tom Hodgson was by Trump’s side as much as possible and is going to seek his endorsement for reelection this November; this could be a national race. In office for 25 years, Hodgson has been the subject of many costly lawsuits, offered to send inmates to build Trump’s border wall, has been the subject of many reports on the mismanagement of the jail, and has never done the paramount thing I think that should be done in corrections – measure the outcomes of programs. He has no idea if the programs he offers reduce recidivism or not! That is unacceptable. It is a stretch to say that programs and efforts to reduce recidivism are a priority outside of talking like a tough guy. We can do much better.
I am running because I want to prove that we can measure the effectiveness of our programs and run a modern jail system and have effective inmate discharge planning. I want to make history and be the first jail to measure every treatment program in an on-going basis in a way that would stand up to academic scrutiny. I also want to send a message that the Trump/Hodgson tough guy attitude is not welcome here and people want more maturity.
From the time someone enters a jail until when they are released, there needs to be a focus on post-release success. While in jail, I want to prioritize drug and mental health treatment, anger management, and education so inmates are released better than when they arrived. Post-release discharge planning needs include housing, a job, and health care as these are the three pillars of prisoner reentry. Repeatedly, we hear that these needs are not a reality under the incumbent Sheriff. I want to change that.
Regardless of if you are affected by who is in jail, I hope you would want to make sure that efforts to reduce recidivism produce results. And that what money we spend on those efforts is not wasted on things that don’t work. This is modern progressive management.
I also want to prioritize advanced training to corrections officers in implicit bias, duty to intervene, mental health awareness, and de-escalation tactics.
I urgently need your help. I started this race with less than $100; my opponent has over $300,000. State law allows me up to $1000 per person per year. Whatever you can donate up to that amount would be a tremendous help. I can win this race – in eight elections in 10 years, I got less than 60% only three times.
I hope that you can support me in my next public service endeavor. Please call me at 508-243-7430 if you have any questions. Please visit - www.PaulHeroux.org for more information. If you can forward this email to others who might be inclined to support me, please do.
I’m here for you if you need me.
